Fort Street Public School
The redevelopment of Fort Street Public School represents a significant investment in educational infrastructure, thoughtfully balancing heritage conservation with contemporary design. Situated atop Observatory Hill in Millers Point, the $60 million upgrade was delivered by the NSW Government to support growing enrolments and enhance learning environments. The project introduced 24 new classrooms, a school hall, library, OSHC facilities, and vibrant play areas.
Delivery was uniquely challenging due to the site’s constrained location, divided by a sandstone escarpment and positioned adjacent to the Bradfield Highway and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Heritage buildings, including the Bureau of Meteorology and Messenger’s Cottage, were carefully restored, while new rooftop gardens, an amphitheatre, and a central plaza were added to enrich the student experience. The site also holds deep historical significance, with layers of early European heritage and the original location of the Surgeon’s Cottage, which was subject to an Archaeological Research Design as one of Sydney’s earliest colonial structures. This project exemplifies the integration of heritage, education, and urban complexity.
